Dubbo House 9

The client came to us with a clear style in mind and then set off to find the right piece of land. Wanting to downsize, a small block that looked out onto a man made landscaped water way was purchased.

The lot size and western orientation required careful consideration during the design phase to ensure protection during our harsh summer afternoons was provided, without compromising views or other passive design elements the client wished to incorporate.

Baradine House 1

Located on a large family farm, this knock down and rebuild project will sit in established gardens and enjoy views to the local mountains. Orientation has been a key driver of the design and a rich material palette has been utilised. The result is a robust yet flexible layout that will perfectly suit this active young family.

The clients engaged a builder early on in the design phase to ensure that the challenges of a remote build were well considered prior to DA/CC approvals. This was particularly relevant given a large amount of rammed earth is proposed.

Ponto House 1

The clients were originally thinking this project necessitated a knock down and rebuild response. However the bones of the original house were good so we undertook a feasibility study, produced concept plans and determined that alterations and additions were a financially viable option.

The site is elevated with an easterly view across paddocks and down towards a river. This suited the spacial programming perfectly with a master bedroom and open plan kitchen / dining taking advantage of views that were previously ignored.

Dubbo House 10

Our clients bought this cottage as an investment, with a view to adding a granny flat to the rear for their own use. Due to the heritage status, extra documentation was required for the DA/CC application, however the approvals process was straightforward as the alterations and additions to the original building were very sympathetic.

Narromine House 1

With a tired transportable house currently located on this farm, a knock down and rebuild solution was required. With a lot of space to work with and a beautiful outlook, a courtyard style house with a central feature pool emerged as the preferred design.

Macquarie Home Stay

It was always Design Tribe Dubbo’s vision for all the Macquarie Home Stay buildings to have a familiar and homely scale that embraced a sense of rural community yet offered the required space, and privacy as needed.

The form and material palette are a direct reflection of the rural Australian vernacular and the use of verandahs, breezeways and central meeting spaces help the design feel humble and homely. An overtly modern and ostentatious design never felt like the right response here. The whole site masterplan has been carefully considered, and as further funding becomes available and the next stages are subsequently built, the sense of community at Macquarie Home Stay will only strengthen as they make use of the large site available.

Design Tribe Dubbo took the project through to the Development Application before handing over to Geolyse to coordinate the documentation, tendering and construction management.

The Macquarie Home Stay Committee were keen to make sure the initial concept ideas was not lost and Design Tribe Dubbo stayed on board as a consultant throughout the build.

Glen Davis House 1

The glorified shed - a low maintenance weekender for two busy clients who just want to escape it all, as often as they can. With breathtaking views in every direction, the orientation was guided by the topography and natural features of the site. The open plan living and outdoor entertaining area look onto a nearby escarpment that dazzles in the afternoon light.

Dubbo House 8

Our clients had built on the lower side of the street many years ago and couldn’t pass on this particular block when it came up for sale. A vacant lot, the size, natural elevation, orientation and views it would afford across town were all highly desirable.

Not afraid to experiment with form and materials, the clients sought a very modern design response. Selected Vitrabond and Styum cladding requires zero maintenance and are key features of the overall look.

Dubbo House 7

This beautiful period home sits on a large residential lot and has been in the family for many years. However the time has come to modernise, and significant alterations and additions are proposed.

The clients are avid gardeners and the extension, featuring a kitchen and living room, will sit beautifully in the landscape. The new building work at the rear is unashamedly modern, a clear break from the original house style.

Wongwibinda House 1

The family had suffered through a number of winters in a poorly insulated cottage in a nearby village before finally saying “enough was enough” and committed to building a house on their property.

The original house had burnt down before their time, and a new site was selected, close to power. Bringing the house forward of a thick tree line allowed us to take advantage of breathtaking views towards hills and valleys to the north.

The topography of the site resulted in a long lean floor plan that enables excellent passive design principles to be implemented. Nestled into the site on the south, the skillion roof rises up to the north, allowing much needed solar access in winter.

Dubbo House 6

The heritage listed cottage on this site was one of Dubbo’s early buildings and has a long history. Prior to Burrendong Dam being built, a number of floods went through the building and there was evidence of several feet of water internally. However the building was rock solid and the current owners bought the property with a view to renovate and extend.

Consultation with Council’s consulting Heritage Architect was sought early on. It was the opinion of all parties that a modern pavilion with a lightweight link between new and old would be an acceptable design solution. We were also permitted to do some internal modifications to the original part of the house. Design Tribe Dubbo have heritage experience and were able to produce the required Impact Statements for the DA/CC submission.

From street view you are not immediately aware of the new work at the rear. It appears that a coat of paint, new roof, new fence and landscaping works were all that took place to the old cottage.

And that was the intention.

It is not until you move deeper into the site and take in the new building work, that you comprehend how unapologetically modern the response has been. The pavilion commands an elevated position (we still had to comply with flood FFL’s) and the open plan kitchen, dining, living and outdoor entertaining area look over the attached paddocks and down across the flood plains towards the river.
